Though the Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM) has long been one of the city's most renowned modern art institutions, with its 2013 relocation to the Biscayne Bayfront, it has been an even more significant presence in the Miami arts community. As if the Herzog & de Meuron-designed tower wasn't magnificent enough, there are kinetic sculptures, model boats, and an outdoor sculpture garden which has become a destination for Instagrammers within the massive 200,000-square-foot museum.
At PAMM, time is more important than medium; as long as a work was made in the twentieth or twenty-first century and communicates something about contemporary living in the region where it was created, it will blend perfectly in. Expect to see a number of unexpected pieces, such as Konstantin Grcic's Netscape, a hanging chair installation that invites visitors to have a seat. Outside, you may enjoy some sunshine and art in one of the museum's most important permanent collections, The Mary M. and Sash A. Spencer Sculpture Garden, which includes large-scale works by Anthony Caro, Gonzálo Fonseca, and Edgar Negret.
PAMM's reputation as one of the city's best art museums precedes it, so the venue is filled with art lovers—as well as visitors wanting to tick all the boxes in Miami. In addition, the museum hosts children's activities and conferences. If you prefer a more adult crowd, go to one of the museum's Third Thursday evening parties, where you may examine the current displays while sipping complimentary cocktails and dancing to live music.
Expect a massive crowd, but it will be mostly people that are interested in the art. Just don't get upset if you get stuck behind a particularly slow mob of art-gawkers, and you'll be OK (and it'll all be worth it).
Given its emphasis on the innovative and creative, it's no surprise that PAMM has its own app, which is free to download and gives a more detailed look at what's on display. Art lectures take between five and thirty minutes, so plug in your headphones and get started.
You will not want to pass up the PAMM Shop. It's often cited as the best museum gift shop in the city, with one-of-a-kind artwork and eccentric products like custom-made glass jewelry, art-covered scarves (we love the Basquiat one), and a small-scale model of the building itself.
Cucuyo is a 3D-printed stainless steel structure that serves as both a sculpture and an outdoor snack bar (with soups, salads, and sandwiches, plus a coffee bar, beer, wine, cocktails, and kombucha, all of which can be enjoyed outside). Because of its position on Biscayne Bay, Verde, a waterfront restaurant with both outdoor and indoor dining, has become a hotspot in its own right. Try the shrimp tacos, butternut squash and fig pizza, mussels with chorizo, or a juicy, bacon-topped burger while gazing out at the Bayfront.
On Thursdays, it is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Fridays and Sundays, it is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Members and guests are encouraged to purchase timed tickets in advance online. Masks for the face are necessary. PAMM mandates everyone, including workers and volunteers, to wear a face covering that covers the mouth and nose when inside the facility to help prevent the spread of Covid-19.
