The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum's purpose is to create revolutionary experiences through art, to acquire, show, and interpret art from many cultures, and to promote FIU's reputation as a leading research university.
The Frost Art Museum has established itself as a prominent cultural attraction in Miami, as well as one of the world's top artistic sites. During Miami Art Week in December, the museum receives hundreds of national and international visitors, and the museum attracts tourists year round owing to its excellent exhibitions.
In 1978, the museum began as a tiny room in FIU's Primera Casa building. The institution realized the need for a separate museum facility as the collections and activities expanded. The museum is currently housed in a stunning 46,000-square-foot structure built by Yann Weymouth and located in the center of FIU's Avenue of the Arts. In 2008, the museum officially opened its doors.
The current collection of the Frost Art Museum contains over 6,000 objects, with a significant depiction of American printmaking from the 1960s and 1970s, photography, pre-Columbian objects dating from 200-500 AD, and a growing number of works by contemporary artists, particularly from Latin American and Caribbean countries.
The museum's exhibition calendar is as varied as Miami's population. They include artists from all over the world, as well as from many cultures, disciplines, and genres. As a free museum, they give the Miami community access to a fantastic arts education. Additionally, the museum features emerging and renowned local artists in select shows throughout the year.
The Frost Art Museum is an integral part of Florida International University, the nation's fourth biggest university and the largest public university in South Florida. FIU is dedicated to study, research, entrepreneurship, innovation, and creativity, with over 58,000 students and over 260,000 alumni.
The museum, as the university's major on-campus facility for visual arts exhibition, gives students the chance to study their field and enrich their college experience in an interesting atmosphere. Students can join the Museum Insiders Program for free entry to the Frost and other FIU Museums.
