Founded in 1925 as the Miami Grand Opera Association, and renamed Florida Grand Opera in 1974, the company now stands as the oldest, continuous performing arts organizations in the state of Florida. Over those eight decades, FGO has established itself as one of the most respected companies in North America, drawing artists from across the globe to perform in productions that consistently showcase excellence and innovation.
The story of Florida Grand Opera is one of innovation and growth, balancing artistry with the logistics of presenting an opera company in a state where performance space is not readily available. Formed by an ambitious group of singers and civic leaders in 1950, the Florida Grand Opera began its first season a few months later, a true pioneer among American opera companies. From that small beginning over sixty-five years ago has grown a nationally recognized opera company that today presents performances from October through April - under its own name in Miami's historic Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, and throughout the year under other identifying names in other cities across Florida.
Because opera is an inherently interdisciplinary art form, opera companies and schools have developed ways to include opera into the curriculum. Florida Grand Opera has provided students with numerous methods to experience and participate with the art form over the years, while also promoting substantial classroom conceptual connection. Opera covers all fine arts disciplines and addresses themes derived from literature, history, and a variety of cultural contexts.
Opera is the art form that comes closest to conveying pure emotion due to the mix of dramatic story, stagecraft, and music, as well as the range and fragility of the human voice.
Florida Grand Opera (FGO), the state's oldest performing arts company, will mark its 80th anniversary season in 2021. Giuseppe Verdi's La Traviata, Gioachino Rossini's Otello, Charles Gounod's Faust, and the Miami premiere of Gregory Spears' Fellow Travelers are among the season's mainstage operas. (All concerts are contingent on the reopening of the Arsht Center in Miami and the Broward Center in Fort Lauderdale.)
